Provence

What you need to know before you go

Provence borders Italy and the Mediterranean Sea in southeastern France. This expansive region boasts a diverse natural beauty of pine forests, colourful fields of sunflowers and lavender, pink salt marshes, as well as deep canyons and turquoise-blue rivers. Over the centuries, Provence has attracted notable artists and authors, including Peter Mayle, Cézanne and Van Gogh, with its elegant architecture, Roman ruins, and hilltop villages.

Provence offers endless culinary delights, ranging from Provencal markets and family-run wineries to Marseille bars and Michelin-starred restaurants. Arles and Avignon are some of the region’s most visited towns, but there are plenty more quaint villages and towns offering a more traditional way of life. Pezenas and Uzes give you a taste of medieval times, while villages like Gordes and Roussillon are built into sharp mountain cliffs.
