We had to make a spur-of-the-moment decision to book a hotel in Catania (or close to). The reservation worked well (and the prepayment) via hotels.com. We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights. The first evening there was a fire-alarm, and at night 3 more fire alarms which kept us nice and awake for the first night. In the morning when we left to do a bit of exploring in Catania, we left a 'do not disturb' sign on the hotel door. This was so that no one had to change our towels or make beds, or go through any unnecessary resource expense or burden the environment unnecessarily with changing towels, etc. When we got back in the evening, the 'do not disturb' sign was removed off the doorknob. Upon entering the room to our surprise we saw altogether 5 beds crammed into our room (with our luggage thrown around, out of the way for the 3 extra beds). I went to the reception and asked them to share their policy on 'do not disturb' and to check what on earth had happened. After all, I'd paid for the room for 2 nights already. I didn't want to stay in a storage room. It took me 3 more visits to the reception and 3 more calls (and altogether 4 hours) for anyone to lift a finger at the hotel to remove the extra beds. They were happy to explain what the mistake had been but not too keen to fix the mistake. The reception lady even said on my last visit to the reception "how much do you hate me now, from 1-10). I said this was not personal, but professional and that they should hop to fixing it
