The places where locals love to eat in Gangneung are especially those serving coffee. The region is famous for its coffee, to the extent that there is even a 'Coffee Street' in the city, which hosts a festival for the flavourful bean each year. Of course, the region is quite famous for soft tofu stew (sundubu-jjigae), too. There’s something about Gangneung’s fresh air and beautiful scenery that make soft tofu stew taste even more savoury.
Seafood is a must-have in this coastal city, so get ready for dried pollock (hwangtae) dishes and raw seafood with vegetables (mulhoi). Here are some places that give you a uniquely Gangneung experience, where locals go to enjoy the finest examples of the city's specialities.

Geumhak Kalguksu
Traditional house of noodles
- Pariskunnat
- Ruoka
Although close to Gangneung Station, Geumhak Kalguksu is well-hidden in the corner of a neighbourhood of narrow streets. It has a rustic appearance similar to a rural countryside home. There are just 2 items on the menu: knife-cut wheat flour noodles (kalguksu) and beansprouts with rice (kongnamulbab).
The wheat flour noodles give off a pleasant aroma and are a bit spicy, while the beansprouts and rice can be described as a simple, pleasing dish. It’s a simple menu that’s faithful to the basics. Be warned: once you’ve had a taste, you’ll be thinking about it for the rest of the day.
