I've stayed at the Coast Calgary Downtown Hotel & Suites many times and always loved the roomy, well-priced suites, the central location, and generally great service. But after my last visit, I won't be returning.
The elevators have always been slow, but this time they became a real safety concern. On Friday, April 25, I got stuck with my small children and several other guests in an overcrowded elevator that froze between floors. We were trapped for about 10–12 minutes, packed in and terrified. Thankfully, an elevator technician happened to be inside with us and managed to force the doors open to trigger a reset.
After that ordeal, we used the stairs exclusively — even though we were staying on the 14th floor.
When I checked out on Sunday, no one at the front desk asked how our stay was, so I didn’t have a chance to mention what happened.
As much as I appreciate the hotel’s affordability, location, and spacious suites, the serious elevator issues — and the lack of concern at checkout — mean I’ll be staying elsewhere in the future.
