We were visiting for two nights for a wedding. The house is an astonishing (and huge) period piece, in immaculate condition, and there are a few guest suites on the sumptuous main floor which are let out. Parts of a large family are resident in the house, but they all have flats or homes elsewhere so our stay was incredibly quiet and luxurious. We saw no other guests, and were encouraged to use the amazing painted and tiled rooms, the period furniture and family accoutrements plus the lovely pool and garden as our own. Pedro and Sofia the owners were hugely welcoming. Pedro used to play rugby for Portugal! It is an old house, and that is its charm. All the bathroom fittings and furniture date back 100 years, so do not come expecting a conventional hotel. Rather, we were treated like friends and this was both pleasing and flattering! Once this house and family owned 15,000 hectares, so it feels like "Gone with the Wind" magically transported across the Atlantic. A unique oasis of bygone Portuguese days.
