Casa San Giorgio

This was terrific. Initially our deposit didn’t go through, leaving some anxiety re securing the room. But dealing with CasaStasy (and Stefano who handles this terrace) was a breeze. Easy walk around lake from ferry to town and a few steps up to piazza. Stefano met us when arranged (texted when on ferry, all so easy) and rooms with two lake views and upper terrace was wonderful. Fully appointed (cooked a meal or two, and some breakfast in sitting room). While the upper terrace/flat roof was shared with those from two other rooms it really works easily and well. There’s some chilled wine available if you forget to buy it virtually next door!Totally close to everything (lakeside restaurants for good pizza, but upper town for far superior restaurants, where we had wonderful meals. Stefano checked in daily, answering all queries. The San Giorgio piazza where it is has the church, butcher, small good shops, easy laundry to use, bars and stroll to the two villas with the marvellous botanical gardens by lake. So easy ferries to Bellagio and Menaggio for day/ half day trips. This was the best little town and such a comfortable and homely place to stay with total but unobtrusive support from Stefano. Will return here. Regretted only stayed over four days. Patrick Lee

Wow! We hired a driver to take to Casa Stacy from Lyon. After a long, long drive, it was a relief to see Stefano waiting for us as we pulled in to the lovely Piazza San Giorgio, one of the central plazas in Varenna. He helped us with our luggage, and then walked us through the many amenities the actual apartment offers. Very nice kitchen, large area to eat, with a nice wrap around sofa to sit on. Bedrooms are large, well furnished and the beds are comfortable. Wi-Fi works very well. The windows all have shutters, and it's a joy to open them and let the air in. All high quality construction throughout the apartment. Then he took us upstairs to the common area. Incredible view, full kitchen, lots of places to sit. Finally we went up one more floor to the roof. Breathtaking view of the water, of the town, of the towns across the water. You can walk safely to everywhere you need to be. There is an alley way down to the beach right next door. Head to the right when facing the water, and you wind through endless passages with small shops and amazing restaurants. You can walk along a boardwalk that takes you down to the ferry boat launch. Food is incredible no matter where you go. Early mornings around 6:45 exit the apartment and head a few doors to your right is a wonderful small coffee shop with locals in it having their espresso. Really friendly, local vibe here.

Stayed 2 nights September with friends. The 2 double bed apartment with a small kitchen living room and private bathroom was perfect for us. It had everything we needed including some cereal yogurt coffee tea bread etc for breakfast. It is located in the town square within easy walking distance to everything in town. There is a bar downstairs which we were warned could be noisy however we had no problems. In fact we loved having it there. The best part of this apartment is a shared terrazzo with has a spectacular view across the lake. Communication with Stefano was great. We would highly recommend.

What amazing experience in Varenna! Stefan’s was so gracious and welcoming. The location of Casa Stacy is perfect! The whole property was neat, clean and secure. Our room was bright, cheery and exactly as pictured. We loved sitting upstairs on the rooftop patio and helped ourselves to the wine available in the mini fridge (signed the honor book for it) and took in the 360 views. Glorious! Local shops for cheese, meat, wine and produce are just a few steps away. The bathroom is not attached but rather next to the room. I was concerned about embarrassing moments going in and out with other guests about but in our 3 days, it never happened once. There is no AC but even in late July, we were fine. There is a great ceiling fan and the cool lake breezes kept us comfortable. Just open the shutters to the balcony and the view is sensational! You might want to bring earplugs if you want to go to bed early! This property is located on the beautiful town square which is the hub of the village. There are no backyards or frontyards in these mountainside villages so the kids play soccer and tag in the square. And in the summer, they play til 10:00! But the local old ladies give them what for so they will tone it down- hysterical! A truly local experience and we loved it!

Terrible experience: we booked this property and when we showed up the hotel had no record of our booking and claimed to not work with hotels.com. We scrambled to find alternative lodging (in the rain!). Resolving the issue and getting a refund from hotels.com has taken FIVE MONTHS and hours of phone calls and many emails without any response. Atrocious service at every turn.
