For the price you pay the rex is a very good hotel in a central location. The service is great along with a lovely breakfast. If by chance you have a problem with the accommodation, the hotel generously solves the problem. I recommend this hotel for people looking for accommodation on a budget.

Upside: Good location, staff very friendly & efficient, very good breakfast Downside: Hotel being refurbished, particularly on the level we stayed. No exhaust fan in the bathroom, and the discovery of bed bugs.

The hotel is very rundown and had a bad odour when we entered. It smelt like a nursing home. The staff were nice and friendly. Apparently they are carrying out renovations, but this hotel needed upgrading a few years ago. The mirror on the bathroom wall swings out, and what on first appearance was a cabinet, was pipes. The walls are very thin and you […] could clearly hear the people next door. The TV was was quite old. The shower/bath very small and awkward. I expected a lot more for the money we paid. The reception staff were lovely the breakfast staff were a bit unfriendly. The rooms whilst comfortable were rather dated and small, doesnt match at all with other 3.5 star hotels I have stayed in. It did the job a bed for the night, though I would look elsewhere next time. The major disappointment was that the restaurant was closed Saturday night???? […] We had intended to eat in though perhaps this was a blessing as if the food had matched the standard of the hotel, we would have been disappointed with that too. Canberra should really upgrade its Northbourne Ave precinct, it looks slum like. The hotel is too expensive for what it offers. The service is friendly but they don't go out of their way to help you out. The decor is tired - they are renovating but that's not exactly a nice atmosphere. All in all, adequate, but over priced.

We were generally happy with our room and the service here. However there are some minor elements that could be upgraded, such as bathroom fitments (no ventilation fan), internet service (the hotel has contracted with a poor service provider), and lighting (very low level). Manager & Management are excellent. Service and hospitality second to none. Hotel is being refurbished. Hotel is extremely tired and in need of a lot of care and money investment. I believe they are trying to do that at the moment.

a reasonable hotel although the furnishings were a little dated & there were an accute lack of car spaces & an older style TV inside an even older cabinet.The room was very quiet which made for a pleasant stay,more than i can say for the formula one up on the federal hyway

Stayed there for three nights recently & I can quite honestly say that the Rex is looking very, very tired. From the broken bathroom fittings, noisy rooms, hearing 4.30am garbage pickup collection noises from outside & not being able to get a car park on their site for the three days which we unfortunately stayed there. Very dissapointing.

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!

Staff at the moment well very welcoming and polite. The breakfast available was nicely cooked and a nice variety to choose from.

We were woken each morning at 7am to rock hammers being used to excavate the land beside us. The TV was old and boxy, the bath was original 70's (very worn and scratched) and I had to fight the people in the room nxt door for the hot water. Wouldn't stay there again. Dirty, and Not Kind At All!! Even I have Not got a House Keeping Sevice for 5 days!! I complianed, but it doesn't really work. Old, but Expenesive! Far from downtown! It was absoutely the worst Hotel I have ever stayed.

I have been a senior government executive, lawyer, and Department Head in 4 States of Australia in the past 25 years. I have worked heading major infrastructure projects in 18 developing countries and am still doing so in the Solomon Islands currently even though I live in Sydney when I am not overseas. I have undertaken more than 200 Missions overseas […] to Russia, Vietnam, Jamaica, Bangladesh, El Salvador, South Pacific counties, Malta GC, Greece, Italy, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Lebanon, Rwanda-Africa, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Latvia, etc. I have stayed in a hotel in the poorest of the 61 Provinces of Vietnam called Hai Hung province next to the border with China. The cost of a room with breakfast there was USD$2-50 per night. That 10 nights stay in the hotel in Hai Hung Province was the worst experience of perhaps spending 2,800 nights I have spent in the past 20 years in hotels in Australia and in the developed world. I rate my stay of one night at the Canberra Rex hotel as the second worst experience of a stay at a Hotel anywhere in either Australia, or anywhere else in the 8 years I have spent in hotels in the developed world. I could not believe that after perhaps 150 -200 visits to Canberra both for pleasure and for business that a Hotel as bad as the Canberra Rex Hotel NorthBourne Ave Canberra could be permitted by the authorities to conduct business. Let me list some of the experiences I had last week: Broken lift All telephones in the Hotel not working on arrival No parking available for my brand new car until a wait of 30 minutes for someone to make a space outside with no cover when a hailstorm was forecast for that afternoon and my $30,000 car in 4 weeks old. Room filthy upon arrival. surcharge of $30 charged by the frontdesk for me because it "was Tuesday night" on top of the high charge I had already paid over the Internet booking. Rooms are ridiculously small, service is OK at best. In two nights there the only thing I found satisfactory was the lobby. Neighborhood was crap, breakfast wasn't crash hot either. Next time in Canberra I won't be looking them up to stay again.

Despite a late check-in, the Rex provided a seamless and efficient reception. The breakfast was a very pleasant surprise as it was a full buffet in a relaxing and spacious dining area. Staff were courteous and efficient while unobtrusive. My stay at this hotel was disappointing to say the least. I understand that the hotel is in the process of being refurbished, and if this is the case, it might be well worth while for them to allocate their refurbished rooms first and only use their un-refurbed rooms as a last resort. The photo's on Hotels.com certainly do not reflect the room that […] I stayed in. Everything in the room was tired and thank goodness I was also because I managed to sleep on top of the bed covers for fear of getting into the bed. The mattress was caved in, in the center but as I said, I was quite tired so managed a good nights sleep. The television was an older style "Deep" TV which would be fine if they had a digital signal piped to it or at absolute very least had decent reception of the analogue signal. In the bedroom there was what appeared to be a piece of "snot" stuck to the wall, as well as other unknown marks on the walls. The most unpleasant was the bathroom. The basin plug was so old it had perished completely and had mould growing in it. There was blue tack stuck to the side of the mirror doing nothing in particular, just hanging out. There were a fair few short black hairs on the floor in the bathroom. And the clincher - When I opened up one of the guest soaps, there was a hair in-bedded in the soap. I am sure that the hotel doesn't manufacture the soap and they have no control over the quality thereof, but it was just a wonderful cherry on the top of an already bad tasting cake.
