Rex Hotel - Whitley Bay

It was ok for the price paid, but it has seen better days and there should be investedt some money to modernise the hotel.

The Rex Hotel, like Whitley Bay itself is really past its heyday. It was once a wonderful place and the room I stayed in was probably once one of the best in the town. I found the staff helpful and friendly. The room was at the front of the Hotel and was clean and comfortable with a view of the seafront. I would definitely book in again.

cold water + non functioning shower which when reported to staff they admitted knowing about but didn't seem bothered.

Very good value, fading edwardian hotel, but clean and OK. Reasonable sized rooms, good free wi-fi and great breakfast included, including full english and also buffet cereals/fruits etc. for the price, it was very reasonable, although if my room had been 2 floors down, i'm sure it would have been noisy with the hotel nightclub (it was a saturday). […] The hotel does need updating in terms of room furniture. TV perfectly ok. Could have been a wee bit cleaner, but it was acceptable. Beds/linens only fair (although i slept well). Room was cool (which I like), but some may find it cold. Large bathroom (my room had the original bathroom - you could see where some rooms had been converted to have en-suites). The hotel is in a glorious location overlooking the beach, and the interior has a pleasant relaxing atmosphere. The big BUT was that on a Saturday night, the noise from the nightclub in the building meant that we had a very disturbed sleep. Basically nightclubs and a hotel offering a good night's sleep cannot coexist. Hotel in need of updating, I appreciate it is old but cleanliness and care could be upheld. The most annoying thing was the persistent banging, sounded like doors but not sure. Room I had was cheap, didn't expect a sea view but all windows were opaque as bins and air conditioning fans were immediately outside. They were noisy at times too. The boiler/ […] heating/water system was VERY noisy too!! Bed was comfotable, bath was large, breakfast overall good and waiting staff efficient and pleasant. Receptionists I saw were not cheerful and were most unwelcoming. Upon checking in it would have been nice to have been greeted and on checkout the receptionist AND dining hall manager both glared and gave me weird looks. The music noise from the downstairs went on until late, and there was noise from drunk people until 3am, early morning. The bathroom was in poor repair. The sink was loose from the wall. Ideal location. Friendly and helpful staff. Decor extremely faded. and worn. Very noisy due to late night/early morning Hotel nightclub and nearby Discos. Good quality of Breakfast. Generally, good value for money.

Cant really compare this motel to others in the area, but here is my overall experience. The location is fantastic, right across the North Sea. Parking is available as long as there are no or few patrons using the bar only, however I had no issues with parking on hhe weekday stay. The room size is good, enough space to comfortably walk around 2 twin […] beds. The bathroom however was not up to par to expectations, low pressure flush and shower. Though 2 individuals sharing the room only complimentary shampoo/conditioner for one, not replaced the 2nd day of stay. Tiles falling apart, and one key to share between 2 individuals. Tired hotel which i'm sure was beautiful 20+ years ago. Paper coming off walls, cracks, worn carpets etc. Bedroom appeared clean, but bathroom was mouldy and although bedding was fresh, probably could have done with replacing the pillows and mattress. O.K. for the money, must have been a great hotel in the past. It was still there in some good and bad ways! Great old paintings on the walls and in the rooms and grand corridors but only 5 channels on the old TV and the remote did not work, no back on it and tape around it to hold in the cheap batteries. Also no Wi Fi in the rooms (not enough signal) […] dispite the signs indicating it should. You may think these are small gripes but did i mention some Poo still in the toilet when I went to the room! Music was blaring from disco until 2pm. When other residents went into their bathrooms the echoing noise was deafining thus resulting in total lack of sleep. We were very dissapointed although the stsaff were nice. We should have been informed before hand about the nightclub/disco.

Beds hard. Water stains on carpet. Stains on chairs in room (and in dining room). Mould on tiles round bath. Wood splitting on windows. Wallpaper pealing. Ceiling needed paintng. Noise from nightclub below excessive as were people leaving the nightclub. Only decent thing was the breakfast.

Don't do it!!! this was the worst hotel we have ever been too with its distastful art work, dirty rooms, mouldy bathroom, brick wall for a view and the feeling of your in a night club when trying to sleep with the banging music from next doors club is not good! My room initially was not satisfactory with broken tiles in the bathroom, I complained immediately, was told it was what I paid for, I disputed that as I paid for a single room had no choose of the cost or told of any variation as to standard available. Also as I nearly changed our mind a fews days before arrival, we were promise sea view rooms not […] on request but on offer. But that was not what happened on arrival. However the Lady who checked on in said that her staff should not have offered a sea view that next time I will have to paid an upgrage for it. whilst I fett let down because my expectation did not happen the Lady was kind to change my room as she advised someone cancelled a sea view single occupancy. without this move I would have been disapointed but I thank God an altrnative was made available for me. hotel is very noisey after 11pm till 3am...but I found staff very helpful....breakfast excellent...they allowed me to park till 3pm at the hotel even after I had checked out.....not that bad a hotel

The TV does not work, the main light is broke, the room was very dirty, the beds are covered in plastic and not comfortable at all. The Breakfast was greasy, cheap and nasty - Do not stay at this hotel!

Great location across the street from the North Sea. Location a bit noisy due to people talking on street outside a club until 1:30 am. Room furniture fairly spartan, but serviceable. Our stay was for one night on a Wednesday, so we were not bothered by the weekend party crowd.

Das Hotel macht im Allgemeinen einen gepflegten Eindruck. Das Frühstück war typisch englisch und daher gewöhnungsbedürftig. Es wurden aber unsere Wünsche erfüllt. Die Unterkünfte waren ausreichend, könnten aber ein wenig pfleglicher sein(Schimmel im Bad,Decken mit Löchern,defekte Glühlampen). Das größte Manko des Hotels ist die Discothek. An schlafen […] ist überhaupt nicht zu denken.Das Hotelpersonal kam mir jedoch entgegen und bot uns andere Zimmer an und statteten mich mit Ohrenschutz aus. Die extreme Lärmbelästigung in der Nacht müßte besser in der Hotelempfehlung erkennbar sein. Ansonsten waren wir mit unserem Aufenthalt im Hotel REX zufrieden.
