Britannia Country House - Manchester

We had approximately a 30 minute wait to check in, where one poor man on reception did his best to deal with the queue of customers who were steadily getting fed up of the wait. We eventually got to the desk only to find that there had been an over booking and that the double room we had booked had now been changed into a twin room and this seemingly […] had been the problem with the people in front of us. Whilst we did book our room over the internet on a very reasonable deal, you still expect to get what you booked and if you are offering cheap rooms then you should make sure that overbooking is not an option. Basically, we needed to be in the area for a couple of days, and the deal I got via hotels.com was, well, the lowest rate I've had at any UK hotel in 5 years. This could have been worrying, but I did read other reviews first. The room was fine (I've slept in worse in more expensive hotels), heated ok, enough power sockets, comfortable bed with enough […] pillows (if you like firm beds, I do). We were above the laundry, which does make some minor noise late at night, but not really a problem. Public-area WiFi connection advertised didn't seem to exist, in fact my reception of 3 mobile was pretty spotty anywhere in the hotel, so that might be something to consider if you're on that network. The TV set was also pretty dated. A non-widescreen CRT showing freeview but losing half the screen due to the programs being in widescreen! Have they even made those TVs in the last 10 years? The in-room facilities for tea/coffee etc were pretty good - often you don't get enough milk for 2 people evening/morning, but they gave us plenty. I can't really comment on the service or staff, as we didn't really interact with them. One thing, I was looking for local attractions brochures, and it seemed half the ones in the bar area were for Liverpool or Glasgow! We didn't try the food so can't comment on that. We also didn't try the gym facilities, as our days were already planned. If I'd been there multiple nights for business, I quite probably would have taken advantage of it. Parking was easy enough. Overall, this is the least expensive UK hotel I've stayed in over the past 5 years, and it's better than a lot of them. It says 3-star, and I wouldn't disagree. As we tend to only use hotels as a bedroom/shower when we're visiting an area for leisure, that's kind of all we want. I'd go back if I had to be based there for work or an appointment in the area. Stayed at the Britannia as I had a business meeting nearby the following day. I didnt realise it was one of those hotels which offered airport parking etc - so it was quite full of cars and I had to wait at least 20 mins to check in. Staff were polite and apologised for the delay. Hotel is nice enough, a little tired in places, but the room was fine […] - although it was right next to the lift, which did keep me awake with its clunking, and woke me during the night. My bad luck for getting that room though - dont let that put you off. Minor cleaning issues - e.g. an old biscuit wrapper behind my bedside table, but the bathroom was enormous and very nice and clean! The bedroom was fairly small, and the TV was tiny and had limited channels, compared to the usual hotels I stay at (premier inn, travelodge types). I didnt use any of the hotel facilities so I cannot comment on those. Does what it needs to do - I wouldnt choose to come here for a break, and 'country house' implies that it is a lot posher than it is, but great for one night - I'd stay again especially at that price. Having paid an incredible low room rate I had no idea what to expect. This hotel was as good as any that I have stayed in and had the added bonus of a pool and gym. Would recommend this hotel to anyone that is driving, if you are looking for a party night in Manchester, recommend a city hotel as this one is too far out of town.

About half the price of a Premier Inn with much better communal facilities but a slightly lower standard of room. The hotel offers great value for money. The shower door in my room was off it's rollers (and I forgot to report this to reception, but the room make up team must be aware). This was dsapointing, but not a major issue. A very nice hotel, staff are very friendly the only thing would comment is the oversized lamps in the bedroom where dusty but our room came with a bath/jacuzzi which was a nice suprise, The decor seems to be aimed at the more mature adults but was extremely nice

Great value for money, i was working nights and even though i had the do not disturb sign up the cleaner played an MP3 player and shouted down the corridor outside my room every morning.

the hotel was gerat all round clean great staff and food was good will be back next week again would recamend to all

Comfortable newly refurbished single room - quiet location and plenty of room. Parking free at hotel. Swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi and steam room for £4. All working and great for relaxing evening. I could not access internet anywhere though as signal too low.

My only fault was with the room I stayed in. It was cold and trying the heather wasn't working, thanks.

The overall experience was great the atmosphere was good with all the functions going on !!! the room was clean and tidy staff happy and cheerfull we would stay there again no problem

Hotel was absolutely fine for a one night stay while working in Manchester. I purposely selected it for its location out from the city centre and also to use the hotels spa and sauna facilities after a hard day! My room was very clean but the overall condition of the hotel I was surprised about with its 3star rating. It is definitely looking on the […] 'tired' side as with most hotels they don't seem to spend money on the upkeep of the hotel. Let me start off by saying that I have been staying in hotels every night for the past 2 months and this has been the worst one so far. We booked a standard double room, which according to the room description was supposed to have a jetted tub, we only had a small shower that did not drain properly. We decided not to worry and just went to bed. At about […] 1 am the fire alarm went off 4 times because of a smoke machine that was being used for an external party in one of the conference rooms. All the hotel guests were gathered in the hotel lobby for about 20 mins with no explanation as to what was going on. Eventually the man at the front desk told ONE guest that it was ok to return to our rooms, that guest then had to pass the information on to the rest of us while the front desk staff hid out the back. We then returned to our rooms. When we woke in the morning my fiance was covered in bites that looked suspiciously like bed bug bites. We packed up our stuff and went to check out. When we got there the girl who checked us out was very nonplussed by the bites and offered no apology for the alarm the previous night. When we got out to our car we found the car park was chained off, even though the parking was supposed to be free. We eventually got out of the car park. We had driven about 2 hours when i realized that i had left my earrings on the bedside table. I rang the hotel to inquire about them and was informed that it was housekeeping that dealt with lost and found. Housekeeping could not be contacted so the girl i was talking to at the front desk informed me that they could do nothing for 2 days. When they failed to call me back I called again and spoke to a manager who informed me that housekeeping supposedly did not have them. I know for a fact that they were left on the bedside table so they would have had to have been picked up by someone when cleaning the room for the new guests, they were obviously just not handed in to management. We were not informed about service in the hotel at check in, neither did we get a welcome call or any call for that matter throughout the stay. I think informing guest can really spur to spend, an added income that should not be overlooked

The hotel has a very convenient location between the Manchester Airport and the city centre. THe bus No 43 connects the airport and the city centre and stops outside the hotel. For 11.50 GBP I bought a MegaSaver pass valid for unrestricted travel on the Stagecoach bus network during one week - travelling from and to the airport and the city centre each […] day during 5 days paid for this pass. I stayed in a cheap room and I suppose that I got what I paid for: a bed and shower. Tea and coffee was available in the room. Every aspect was ideal for what i required. There was a lovely pool and leisure facilities. It was conveniently located as i was visiting my daughter in Manchester university. There was a direct bus link with a regular bus service to the university accommodation and into Manchester.

stayed here for 4 nights and my bed sheets were not changed for three nights. i rang up on the fourth day from work and the sheets were still not changed so duty manager changed them. i had booked this hotel for one night as i thought it was convenient location wise and price not too bad. I really did regret it as the halls stank and so did the rooms. when i entered the room i saw a drawing on the of nude lady. i really found that embarrassing to be honest. The bathroom had orange stale on inside of the shower and no soap at all. […] the noise level was horrendous in early morning hours. noise through walls was really loud and could hear all conversations . If you are a passenger in transit to/from Manchester Airport, this hotel might be useful. As a single person, wanting two nights in this area of Manchster, it was unhelpful, uncomfortable and not accomodating to anyone who would prefer not to be treated like a sheep. Unfortunately the room had a very strong damp odour and was also directly across and above the area frequented by smokers attending the hotel and its functions. Consequently airing the room out by having the windows open only increased the odour problem.

This was without dowt the worst hotel room i have ever stayed in. The room was too small and there was no air conditoning in the room. The room and surrounding staircase was full of dust and grime.Poor service throughout!!!!

Very nice hotel, good value. One problem was the electrics in room. If you had the television on and wanted a cup of tea at the same time, it fused. Which was annoying as twice I was watching programs and did not get to see the end. Also could be serious underlying electical problem, did report it next day.

Looked at the website and thought I would treat myself as I had been staying in Budget hotels all week on business The room was worse than my old student accomodation, Business was obviously booming as there was parking was appaling The food- well - There was a " carvery " resturant - but all this was serving was slop of chicken chassure, a bacon […] chop or scampi. I decided to go for the safe option and have a freshly cooked pizza from the pizzeria- Bad move... It came back black and when i tried a slice i got covered in oil that flowed like a tap from the Pizza- definately not Dominos standard. To top everything off when I asked for a large soft drink i was informed they only offered 200ml bottles of coke- When you are only entitled to claim for 1 drink with your meal on business this meant further personal expenditure I didnt even visit the inhouse pool - as this was a further fee to use Overall I will not be staying at another Britannia hotel on either business or pleasure again! We booked for 1 night plus 3 days parking as we were going away for a few days. Check in was 14.00 we got there at 15.00 the queue was out of the door to check in and only 2 reception staff on duty, we decided to get something to eat in the hotel bar and try to check in later. There was 1 barman on duty who was totally rushed off his feet as other people […] had the same idea plus there was 2 weddings in the hotel with guests arriving too. We eventually got to check in at 18.00 after standing in a queue for 30 mins. We got to our room after a few twists and turns through wrong doors the directions to the rooms were not very clear. We had an early start for the airport so we went to bed about 22.30, the corridor and room doors have strong return springs on them so everytime someone entered their room or the corridor the doors slammed hard, at 03.00 the hotel fire alarm was activated for approx 30 seconds, the sounder was above the bed. All night people were walking around the hotel looking for their rooms,doors slamming, right up until we were leaving at 06.00. We have previously stayed in this hotel plus other Britannia Hotels with no problems but I will definately not stay in this particular hotel again. The hotel was fine for our requirement. The only criticism we had was the layout and lack of management at the breakfast meal which resulted in long queues which irritated guests.

Very cost effective hotel but not very comfortable. Almost impossible to find a car parking space as it acts as car park for Manchester Airport. Car alarms constantly sounding and nothing the hotel can do when they are owned by people on holiday abroad. Not a great experience.

Although the BCH was in a convenient and pleasing area the maintenance and cleanliness left a lot to be desired. Staff did answer questions but did not seem very pleased about having to do so. And the breakfast served in he dinning area was what seemed to be on the high end of the price scale, which would of been fine if it was nicely prepared food, […] but this was the opposite. The fire alarm was broken (on complaining we found out it had been broken before we checked in) and went off every hour through the night. There was a disco underneath our window which went on into the early hours of the morning, there were 2 fights in the hotel overnight lasting until 3 or 4 in the morning. Chose this hotel as it seemed online from the pics quite nice, plus it was advertised near to Old Trafford. As we were going there thought it would be ideal. We arrived on our first night at around 10pm. When we got to our room it was tiny. I could tell by the fixed headboard that the room should only have been a single. Couldn't change it as they were […] booked out for the weekend. Basic carvery food available from the restaurant 3 or 4 courses. Very poor! If you wanted food you had to order in yourself from an outside take away, (by the way that wasn't good either!). Witnessed food being "served" to customers in the main bar one evening, staff member, think it was one of management, put the food down on the table & threw napkins down in between them. Every day when we came down past the main bar, dirty glasses stacked on the outside - very uninviting to arriving guests. Overall so many great things going for this hotel. You arrive at a nice gateway on the way in with a lovely short drive up to the front of the hotel. The lobby & reception are nice & presentable, but a few pointers to the hotel. 1. if you are allocating a couple to a double room for 3 nights, make sure its a double room ( our room was booked over 2 months in advance). 2. See to your food & beverage offering, cleanliness & service standard, in my opinion it is not anyway near 3 star standard. 3. the state the main bar was left in every night makes me wonder what levels of hygiene were in the rest of the hotel. very impressed, room was very clean, good location, wanted to stay longer.

Arrived at this location after a 5 1/2 hour drive. The receptionists were pleasant and we were allocated a room rather quickly. However, being extremely tired, we explored the hotel briefly and then retired to bed. That was the worst nights sleep I have ever had. The bed base appeared broken and I felt as if I was being sucked into an abyss in the matress. […] The next morning, I complained about the bed, within a few hours, the bed was replaced. The breakfast was exceptional value for money. The waiting staff were friendly. The swimming pool and spa area were a god send and a very nice place to relax, however, the Gym equipment was old and tired and a bit scary to use. The steam room was also broken. If you were to overlook the above, then the hotel was in beautiful grounds, very clean, staff very responsive, the room was a good size, and the jacuzzi in the bath tub was awsome. Very happy with hotel. Near bus stop for city centre. Hotel busy with weddings. Room very small but very warm. Hard to sleep at night with noise from other rooms and people in the corridor. Walls very THIN!!!!!

Found reception to unhelpful, they rushed our check-in through. As our directions to the room were rushed and mumbled I asked for these to be repeated and I got tutted and felt like I was in there way. We also asked if there any spare rooms and our reply "full booked, Next" So I took 2 steps away from reception and booked the spare room on my Iphone […] through their website, joint the back of Queue and checked our friend in!! Also states 24 hr food service, we requested food at 11pm only to be told no room service or food available and then was hung up on, rung back requested breakfast only to be told not available and hung up on again. Room was big and ok, bathroom had dirt in the corners but I have stayed in worse. If you don’t want to be treated well and just want a place to lay your head then this is the hotel for you. Rooms are basic, no frills but clean. Avoid the food here.

Lovely hotel setting, nice reception, takes a while to get served but once you have their polite. Room was nice and clean bit small but then we only asked for a standard. Bathroom was nice and clean. Breckfast was nice but there were very few staff and most of the tables were dirty when you got there as they wern't cleaning them. Swimming pool and equipment […] were nice would have been nice to have had that included into the price of the hotel. Overall nice stay polite people at the bar. Well after arriving this hotel lobby looked great. This was short lived when were we given the keys to a small damp room in the DAMP wing. The stair well to the rooms smelled like a tramps pocket. Dampnest and poor decoration in the room were are my endering memories of this Hotel .

The room was adequate and typical of large consortium type rooms. The staff were attentive and polite. The faciltites that we used were adequate though I did not consider the buffet to be of high standard and would probably not wish to repeat the experience.

The reviews l'd read weren't glowing so it was a pleasant surprise to find a newly refurbished hotel! My single, as mentioned, was newly refurbished; tastefully decorated and generally excelllent.(The first room l was shown was equally nice and even quieter but the kettle and phone didn't work). The en suite was also excellent. The health club and pool […] were very good.Staff were excellent and helpful, if a little overworked and stretched. It is a busy airport type hotel and l saw a few queues at check in and the huge parking areas were jam packed. Buses into central Manchester are frequent and stop nearby,and even run all night! Also, Northenden is five minutes walk away with garage/shops/restaurants etc So l happily give them a very positive review and my tip for improvement would be to have fans in the rooms or at least enough available at reception for everyone. The weather was warm, but not super hot, and my room was stuffy and a little airless, making sleeping a little uncomfortable. Like many British hotels that don't have air conditioning this hotel would be greatly improved in summer with fans in the room. They are not expensive and the lack of a fan can really spoil your enjoyment. In conclusion, l would cetainly recommend this hotel especially if you get a good rate! Lisätietoja
