Essex House Hotel

I left a scarf behind and realised a couple of hours after departure. For a week I phoned and emailed them every day to try and retrieve it, but they never replied. They just don't answer the phone. The front desk is manned by polite smiling people, but completely clueless about any query thrown at them.

Great hotel right behind The Clevelander in South Beach. Walk to beach, restaurants and nightlife. Much quieter and cozier than The Clevelander but have full access to everything there. Restaurant was fantastic with wonderful service.

I stay here every time I visit and I am never disappointed by my room, hotel staff, or location. The restaurant and bar are bonuses, but the comfy patio steals the show.

Authentic Art Deco hotel, however the suite was a bit basic for the price paid ($300 plus per night). I enjoyed the authentic design details but my wife hated the hotel. Overall, this was a fine place to stay. The room was decent but small, with no place to lay anything down. Beds were ok but I could feel each spring of the mattress. That being said, it was clean, the windows kept the surrounding sound out and it was one block from the beach.

For an older building it was in okay condition. It is very clean and house keeping does a remarkable job. There was a loud "motor-type" of noise that seemed to be coming from the vents that kept waking me up even with my ear plugs on. The picture on the televison was not clear and there appeared to be difficulties with the reception but I didn't watch […] a lot of tv. I did report both issues to front desk. The Essex is in a fantastic location to the beach, great shops and a great party place next door. staff at the front desk were helpful and gace great advice about appropriate sites to see and actvities to do.

The staff were super helpful and the location is perfect - close enough to the beach to be convenient, but not so as to be noisy.

All the reviews I read before I booked the Essex are accurate. Very good location to beach, shopping and restaurants. The hotel is well kept and clean. Try booking a suite if you want lots of room. Best location in South Beach, close to everything. Clean rooms and friendly staff with free ccontinental breakfast was great. Only complaint is no ice machine... you have to ask the front desk to get it for you.

We stayed only one night at the Essex House and wish we had planned for a longer visit prior to our cruise leaving from the Port of Miami. The hotel is "way cool" (a quote from my 25 year old) and blends the terrific Art Deco architecture of South Beach with an outstanding modern rehab done three years ago. The hotel is even on the walking Art Deco […] historical tour. The pool is private and zen-like. The rooms are comfy (not huge) and very clean. The location is beyond excellent. We danced the night away a block away on Ocean Avenue outdoors at the Clevelander, which is affiliated somehow with the Essex House, and didn't even hear the noise of the party district after getting back to the hotel. Clean, good location, large room and nicely decorated. Excellent front desk and valet parking service. Complimentary Wifi and breakfast was a must. The only downside is that there is no refrigerator in the room.

The rooms were quiet and comfortable, but as soon as you stepped out the door you were in the middle of the action. It was perfect for enjoying South Beach while having a sanctuary to get a little peace and quiet for relaxing, or getting a few hours of sleep, before you start the next round of fun.

Great hotel, a block from Ocean Avenue. My second time to stay at the hotel. Deco at its best. Worst problem was that we got to hear the music from the hotel lobby all night. if you reserve, make sure your room doesn't get to hear the hotel lobby music.

Essex House was a nice place, clean, quiet while right in the middle of everytgung that South Beach has to offer. Being a sister hotel to the Clevelander allowed for us to have a quiet stay and have a bar close by. The pool is small but great to sit by after the busy beach. This was a lovingly maintained art deco hotel, and the staff were extremely helpful. They could not do enough for you. I would definitely recommend this hotel, just remember you need to budget an additional $29 per day for parking.

This was a very shoddy hotel experience. I was having a great trip, so it was in spite of that I continually ignored the zero amenities, dank smelling room broken elevator for a 3rd floor walk-up and construction going on in the lobby. If I hadn't been busy having fun at Basel week this review would be even worse.

I really enjoyed my stay at Essex... perfect location just in the middle of South Beach Miami. One block distance from the beach and restaurants and pubs. Small but nice swimming pool! I would come back for sure! ;-)

Fantastic location, steps to the beach and South Beach attractions. Hotel staff very friendly and courteous, although not always particularly knowledgeable when asked about traffic to/from airport, restaurant recommendations, etc. Was in Miami to run a half marathon and therefore didn't want a total party hotel, as we needed to catch some zzz's before […] the race. This hotel fit the bill perfectly ... located in South Beach but not a hot spot for night life in and of itself, although minutes away from other hot spots. We slept well and weren't disturbed by partying at our hotel. Clean, well lit rooms. Three things that would improve it though: an in-room safe, a fridge and breakfast included. The room was great but we missed having a fridge and drink making facilities. Staff are very efficient and friendly in a pleasant non pushy way! Happy hour with free beer or wine and canapes was a great idea and at 4:30 to 5:30 was a nice " chill out back at the hotel" time before going out for the evening.

This is a great, small hotel in the perfect location. It's just one block to Ocean Drive and beautiful beaches and there is excellent shopping all around. The hotel usually has a happy hour taking place and we really enjoyed the complimentary drinks and sushi each afternoon.

Booked this hotel for a weekend getaway. Service was great. Location is great, central to everything south beach. Unfortunately it is very noisy from the street traffic. We stayed during Halloween and rented two suites. The hotel was in a great location and close to the beach. The restaurant in the hotel had really good food and drinks and all the staff was very helpful. Everyone in my group would stay here again!

My wife and I stayed for three nights October 26-29 in one of the suites off the courtyard. The suite was spacious, well designed, bright and very comfortable with a great bathroom including jacuzzi. Will never stay here again. Run down. No room service until after 11 am and then it's from hotel next door. Loud 24/7. Outdated a/c is either off or blowing like a tornado.

Visited So. Beach area and was delighted with my stay at the Essex Hotel. Stayed in one of the courtyard units and loved the privacy feeling. Imaculate room, great beds, hugh marble bathroom w/ jacuzzi tub. But the best feature was the staff, especially Juan, who all went out of their way to help in every way. Everyone working here was very helpful. We ended up getting a shuttle to the Sawgrass mall for 30 dollars a person (round trip). If you are going to an NFL game go to the Art Museum down the block on Ocean Drive and they will give you discounted cab drivers phone numbers.

For the most part I enjoyed my stay at the Essex, but if you chose to stay here, beware of housekeeping. While housekeeping cleaned my room, I guess the $5 tip I left for them wasn't enough. Two bags in the room had clearly been opened and looked through, fortunately nothing was taken, but I attribute that to the fact that there was no cash or other […] items of value to be taken. It's an old property, and it feels like it. They've done a good job dressing it up, but you can feel the age of the building. Ex. hot water running out at times, no bathroom strainer (just a hole in the tub), all the handles in the tub being different lengths, etc. Our room was pretty small for a double. The bathroom was small, and the main area barely […] fit two double beds and a chair. It was reasonably clean, though, and the maids did a good job turning it over every day. The location is great. 1 block from the beach and right in the heart of South Beach. There was no shortage of things to do within walking distance. Would I stay here again? Probably not.
