We were expecting a high-class hotel after all the good reviews and cool pictures in hotel website but the reality was a nightclub/bordello-like middle level hotel with shabby, tiny rooms. Nice hotel, convenient location IF you want to stay in close to Union Square, which isn't a bad idea if in town only for a few days. Nice decor. Rooms not huge, but who cares.

I was extremely impressed with my recent stay at the Clift!! We were celebrating my wife's Birthday so I booked a room at the Clift and made dinner reservations at the Cliff House both fabulous. As soon as we checked in, the receptionist upgraded our room to a king suite for no extra charge. Our room was so small you could barely walk around the bed without walking into it - I'd booked a Superior room so this seemed surprising. On check out, when asked, it turned out we had been put in a basic room and were told that as there's only a $60 difference in price, they would waive our incidentals bill instead. Perfect place to stay in San Francisco with easy access to all areas. The bed was very comfortable. The room was quite spacious and the peppermint shampoo is great. The shower is very forceful could benefit from some water saving device to make it more environmentally conscious.

VERY friendly staff. Stayed here after I proposed to my fiance, and they were more than accommodating and gave us comp champagne, and free upgrades for the room.

Best hotel experience and service I've enjoyed in a long time. From check in to check out, I felt very looked after by the hotel staff. Colin checked us in, gave us an unexpected upgrade, and promised we would love the room, and we did! Within 10 mins, they called the room to make sure we were happy and if wr needed anything. It is an older building that has been remodeled. Dimmed lights and euro-trash sophisticated decor. We stayed on the second floor and it was painted pastel purple. No offense, but it kind of reminded me of a sophisticated brothel of some sort, or that is the feel I gathered from walking down the halls. Overall, it is nice and sophisticated but this is a party desitination as we stayed just above the club/bar floor where dance music was bumpin. Rooms were small but modern and upgraded with nice additions like flat screen tv, ipod dock, and mirrored at both ends of the bed, perhaps to give it a roomier look. bathroom was extremely small. The staff is really on it at this place. They could not have been nicer or more attentive. The concierge, Andrea, went above and beyond to handle any request and even sent a a tray of fruit, nuts, bottled waters and nice personal letter to our room the first day simply because I had made a comment about the shower nozzle being a bit low. It's not the […] newest, fanciest place around when it comes to the rooms because it's an old building but they have done about much as they can to make it great. The bell boy, door man, housekeeping...full of great info and they are definitely there to please...We've stayed a lot of very nice hotels and this is some of the best service I've ever encountered. My wife and I stayed for three nights the room was tiny with barely enough room for our two suitcases. The bath was very small the toilet was very tiny and low to the ground. The room was extremely noisy we could hear the person next door speak on the phone. No sound proofing. The condition and service levels at this hotel are certainly degraded. While the hotel was boasting about their recent renovations to the room, I found the quality of the room to be dark, uncomfortable bed linens, lack of attention to detail in cleaning in the bathroom, dented and "worn" blinds and window treatments. The Clift is a nice hotel in the heart of it all, but....the walls are paper thin, maids knocked on door twice before 9:00 to make our room up after being told the first time we are not up yet. Security came to our door because of noise, which was our iPhone on there stereo and being too loud for the person next door. There was no call to the room, […] just 2 security guards at the door. FYI you never open the door at a hotel for security, you don't know who they really are. Overall, the hotel is old and is only in business because of there bar/lobby, which the bartenders are rude and expect a $5 tip on your two cocktails you paid $35 for, just a tourist trap. Clift was overpriced at $172 plus taxes. Room was clean and comfortable. Although located in downtown San Fancisco, the street was unlit and not looking very safe at 10:00pm. There were a number of homeless people lying on geary street. I recommend taking a hotel on powell street instead. There was a good breakfast place in front of Clift.

I was concerned after reading the reviews that the room quality was abysmal, especially compared to the lobby. I was pleasantly surprised. I stayed in the Deluxe King, which was spacious and tastefully decorated with a wonderful view of the city. The bed was so comfortable it took a lot of willpower to leave in the morning. On the other hand, the receptionist […] had accidentally booked two nights instead of one and proceeded to go back and forth between the front desk and her office for half an hour trying to figure out how to fix it, all without a word of apology. It couldn't have been very difficult since the room was pre-paid, and there was no reason she couldn't have showed us to our room first before dealing with her mistake. I found her demeanor overall to be very unprofessional. And since when did hotel staff stop offering to help with guests' bags? All in all, I've stayed at a few dozen hotels in San Francisco, and Clift is definitely one of the better choices. Clift had been recommended to me by a friend. Location is great, short walk to Westfield and restaurants. The bar on the ground floor is good fun. Rooms are a little on the small side but well appointed and clean.
