This hotel used to be one of the premier hotels in Tokyo. It's still a very good hotel, but time may have passed this one by. There are many hotels in Tokyo that are better, but this one is still reasonably priced. Services and amenities are very good, but not great. The Pros - excellent service, variety of quality restaurants and bars, awesome grounds, steps away from Tokyo subway and JR line, short walk to shopping district. Cons - lack of widely available wireless internet, tiny gym in Garden Tower, uncomfortable mattress. The pros far outweigh the cons ... Services are very good and room (upgraded upon arrival at no cost) was comfortable with full garden view and Mt Fiji. But in my short stay I got lost inside hotel because hotel is huge and tower section where I stayed is somewhat confusing. I wish hotel would put clear signs so that I wouldn't have gotten lost.

This hotel looks like it would have been great 30 years ago. Now it just looks outdated, smells, smoky and musty in many places, carpets are stained in the lobby, food at the hotel is expensive. This hotel just isn't competitive on any level with others I've experienced in Tokyo.

When we checkin, they offered to upgrade the room to Main tower from Garden tower room which is excellent and most of staff are very helpful and can speak good english. Location of this hotel is good if you want to go to Tokyo and Shinjuku as this hotel location near to Akasaka - Mitsuke station Metro. old hotel, yet clean & well-maintained. clerks are nice but can't speak English fluently, which makes it difficult to communicate.

I have stayed in this hotel since 1990's and everytime you leave this hotel to the airport, you wished you had just one more night to stay longer...that's enough to explain how good this hotel is....cheers!

I've stayed at the garden tower with my wife, my parents and my sister. First I had a problem with the reservation. I've booked 3 rooms for 2 adults and 1 child each. When I got there they gave me rooms with only two single beds. After I complained and asked we're my kid was suposed to sleep they agreed to give me an extra bed, but they wanted to charge […] me for that. Of course I did not accept this and after some time they agreed to give me triple rooms. Although I made reservations for non-smoking rooms, one of them had a terrible smell of cigarret. The hotel manager said it was the only triple room left and I had to decide between a cigarret smell or staying in a room with two single bedrooms. Can you believe that? I also think they do FALSE advertisement in two things: 1) Although they say differently in their page, there is no wi-fi in the hotel (only wired and expensive internet), not even in the lobby. So if you have an iPad or iPhone and wants to connect, chose another hotel. 2) They say there's a fitness center in the hotel, but that's more like a bad joke. It's only a tiny couple of cardio equipments. If you really want to (or have to) work out they offer you access to a "private club" located in the hotel, but for crazy 80 dollars PER USE! (yes per person, per use, I know it's insane!). The rooms in the garden tower also desperately needs to be renovated. But their clean. The location of the hotel is excellent, just a few steps from the subway with access to the Ginza Line (the main subway line). You have many dining and shopping options in the immediate surrounding. I've stayed at several hotels in Tokyo, and this my second sojourn to the New Otani. It's not the glitziest, the shiniest, the newest. It has a familiar, homely quality though, which makes stepping out of the taxi a comforting experience. It is best seen as a great vantage point from which to jump into all that Tokyo has to offer. The intersection […] of 5 metro lines within 50m walk is a bonus that cannot be overlooked. And Akasaka has some terrific spots for a quick bite to eat, with a little flash built in. For us mobile roadwarriors, do note there is no WiFi access, only broadband via RJ45 cable in the room - speed very good and the price reasonable, about US$15/max day. I have a MacAir and did need to pop out to buy the RJ45 adapter, though this gave a charming young concierge the opportunity to practice his english on the crazy lady who looked him in the eye and said 'Apple Store!'. This trip I was 'gifted' with a 5.3 earthquake in the early hours of the morning. The room shook a bit, nothing cracked, and no panic ensued. Seriously, what could I truly complain about after that! Overall, a very good to excellent hotel. The staff were highly trained, helpful and knowlegeable. The vast majority of reception and housekeeping staff had good English skills so conversing with them was easy. I had asked in my initial booking for a non smoking room preferred but my initial room was strongly smelling of cigar smoke. On my request they […] assisted me in changing rooms the next day, no problem. I think an internal hotel map with local streets shown would have been helpful so as I could navigate out of the hotel to outside streets as there are three main joined buildings in the hotel and many different lower levels to negotiate in some cases and can be confusing. Possibly a light snack "cafe" in the hotel would be handy, for coffee/tea and sandwich type meals. Somewhere that is quick to serve and less expensive than the other restaurants in the hotel. I thought it disappointing that they did not have wi-fi capability in the rooms and it should be free. The cost of purchasing internet time was expensive. Rooms smaller than Intercon or Hyatt and not as good, room condition pretty old and uninspiring. Pretty good location as Akasaka is a great area. No real bars in hotel itself. Gym is very small with no weights.

The New Otani Toyko is a premier hotel in Tokyo. It is situated on 400 year old gardens in central Tokyo. The rooms are spacious for Japan. It is a 5 star hotel, but it may be listed as 4. This is a must-stay hotel. Aside from the top rating I gave, there is a true gem on the compounds. The Japanese garden is stunning with a waterfall, koi (carp) pond, and lush greenery. Good hotel; excellent facilities and service.

The Hotel is set in a beautiful garden with carps swimming in the ponds and whilst having your breakfast, you can see the beautifully landscaped garden which is very well maintained. I reserved a room with a king sized bed, but was given a room with twin beds. When I asked for a room with a king bed as requested I was told none were available. The room was a bit antiquated and the bed itself was definitely sub par. FAR WORSE was that I had an important meeting & requested a wake up call and a back-up wake up call. This was my first time in Tokyo and I wasn't sure which hotel I should pick. People always recommend staying in Roppongi or Ginza but hotels there were pricer than in Akasaka where the New Otani is. A taxi to Roppongi or Ginza takes 10 minutes and -taxi hotels charged the same as the ones I flagged on the street. The New Otani is a beautiful hotel, a bit old, but very comfortable. I got a room in the 34th floor with an amazing view of the city. The room has all the amenities you'd find in any 5 star hotel. Complementary toiletries include toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash, etc. The breakfast buffet was excellent. Expect Japanese perfection in their staff service. The rooms in the Garden Tower are now so shabby & in need of refurbishment they are really not pleasant to stay in. The Main Tower however is completely the opposite and could not be better. I managed to upgrade for a reasonable cost to the Main but had this not been possible I would not have stayed in the Garden Tower. The grounds are simply beautiful, especially when having breakfast and looking out the floor to ceiling glass..very relaxing. Cramped room - old & small bathroom (plug did not fit tub so could only shower) - overheated at all times. Business center erratic service. Outrageous price for gym/pool. Shall I go on?

New Otani is placed conveniently next to five subway lines and in a great neighbourhood with many restaurants, cafes and some bars in walking distance. The hotel is very nice with good amenities. Rooms are decent size but not huge. Value for money is excellent compared to other 4-5 star properties in Tokyo.

The new Otani Hotel air conditioner did not work well and the room felt humid. After complaints the A/C was serviced and left on to better cool a slightly larger room. This hotel had the largest rooms of the four hotels that we stayed in Japan. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were quiet and well maintained. One of our rooms had a dirty mark next to the flush button on the loo. The staff cleaned the whole bathroom again and were very embarrassed when they missed the dirty spot a second time. We arrived on an early flight in Japan and unfortunately the hotel was not flexible enough to check us in until 2pm. Breakfast, internet charges and use of some of the hotel facilities were not included in the rates. These charges added considerably to the total cost. However, there are lots of cheap eateries close to the hotel, including some western take away chains. There is a subway adjacent to the hotel with a good service to most of Tokyo's tourist sites. The hotel staff were very good at providing advice about getting around Tokyo. We loved New Otani. We had two communicating rooms. we were traveling with our 3 kids. It was impeccable, very comfortable and the we had a view on the gardens and the koi pond. The personnel was very helpful : they reserved the limousine service for Narita for us, helped us found tickets for the Ghibli Museum, gave us itineraries, train time tables... While the price on this is higher than some other hotels in the area, you'll enjoy a larger, more American-sized room; a variety of amenities (each with its own price tag); and a good location that's near the train and shopping/restaurants. We arrive a little early but they have accommodated us checking in early. But the room was one of those old and not been updated some times and very small. Not what we use to from past experience in this hotel. We were very unhappy. We complained then they have changed to the room which was what we used to with the great view. We were very satisfied […] after that. When we were leaving to Narita, we realized we have made a mistake, we should've booked one hour early shuttle bus. We need to use taxi otherwise we would miss the flight! When we mentioned about it to a porter, they have arranged us the return of the ticked as well as taxi to Narita airport in a few minuets.
