The hotel is supposed to be a smoke-free environment, but reeked of cigarettes on the outside of the building and inside the room; the toilet was basically broken, as it continued to run after each use (even after jiggling); the king-sized bed was sunk in at the middle as if two beds were put together; the continental breakfast was a disaster (roaches […] crawling around and on food)! "Good value"
Room comfortable and clean, service courteous and helpful, breakfast simple but plentiful, fresh and neatly presented. Despite some rough edges in the maintenance of an older building, a more solid and pleasant experience than in some of the more expensive neighboring hotels.

"WORST EXPERIENCE I'VE EVER HAD AT A HOTEL"
On Saturday, December 31, 2011 at approximately 7:00pm I checked into the Howard Johnson Hotel in Newark, Delaware on College Avenue. They put my credit card into their system and gave me my room keys for my room. I went into the hotel room to use the bathroom and check out the room and then left to attend a family function. When returning to the room […] at approximately 1:30am my room keys did not work. There were young (18-20 year old) kids running all over the hotel hallways and outside who were drunk, drinking and smoking marijuana. I went to the front desk and asked for another key to my room. The same desk clerk who checked me in gave me another key for the room without even checking my identification to make sure it was my room. I proceeded to my room and after sliding the key I tried to open the door. The door opened a few inches and stopped because it was chained locked from the inside. Young kids were in my room that I already paid for and checked in. They were smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol. I immediately ran to the front desk and explained what was going on to the clerk. His response consisted of, “I don’t know what your talking about, screaming profanity at me, leave here now, your will not get any of your money back trust me.” He also claimed he had no idea who the manager was. I proceeded to call the police. When the officer got there did not do anything about the situation. He told me the only thing I could do was to dispute the situation with my credit card company due to my card already being charged. I called my credit card's customer service while the officer was standing there to report the situation and they said that the dispute office would be closed for a few days due to the holiday so I could call once they re-opened. I also canceled my credit card right then for the safety of my personal information. I left the hotel and had to find another hotel where I had to pay a larger amount to stay. "For the price, this was a good night's sleep"
We rented a room here for New Year's Eve so we would have a place to crash near the bar where we were celebrating. For a VERY reasonable price, we got a comfortable night's sleep. The hotel was not at all attractive or updated - our toilet was missing the tank lid - but for a comfortable bed, it was a bargain.

Stay in Howard Johnson Inn is a good deal I can find over the Internet around University of Delaware -- Newark area. However, (1) the breakfirst is too simple, not good. (2) One night there was no hot water. (3) Another night there was no Internet connection. (4) they charge early check-in for some $40, that is not friendly. Made a prepaid reservation through hotels.com, was charged a $100 deposit upon check in and the deposit was never refunded. If you want to get ripped off, stay at this hotel. Manager was rude and uncooperative. I will be taking up this issue with my bank.

we stayed there for 4 nights, the hotel is cheap and nice. the breakfast was ok and the beds were comfortable and clean. I wasnt satisfied with towels , so you may have yours. The recieptionist girl, sara, was really friendly and helpful. I think I'll check it again,

I was not impressed with the hotel. My room was right over the laundry room. The bathroom was horrible. When showering the drain was not working properly (I didn't have it in tub mode, I checked) and ended up standing in ankle deep water while showering. At least 20 minutes to drain! I didn't opt for the continental breakfast, so I can't comment on […] that. The hotel seems close to some industrial complex, lots of traffic going by. Conveniently located near I95, so that was a plus. I will look for different options next time. "Close to University of Delaware, nice room"
This hotel was not the best, but the bed was comfortable, the room was nice and I enjoyed my stay. Especially since the cost was the lowest I found. Overall, it was worth it for sure.

I had a 2 queen room which was clean and nice. Nice bathroom, had useful stuff like blowdryer, safe and ironing board and iron. Had DirectTV and large tv, beds were comfortable. Free breakfast which was boiled eggs, bagels, muffins and stuff like that. The only good feature about the room was the price. Although clean for the most part it was listed as non-smoking but it was clear the room had been smoked in. Maintenance was very poor. The toilet tank cover was missing and the seat would not stay up. The coffee service in the room had not bee replaced in ages. The motel is a little worn out but was quiet and comfortable. The breakfast was good. The shower plumbing was a little fragile looking but it worked. For the money, it was an excellent value.

"Great Location.... But Party Central"
Shortly after we checked in around 5:00 Friday afternoon, I noticed several landscaping trucks parking in the lot and workers appeared to be returning "home". Indeed, there appear to be a number of people living at this hotel and you can see them hanging around. Nothing wrong with that - everybody has to be somewhere - but it creates a different feel […] than other hotels. The relatively cheap rates also attract a number of young people, who woke us up around 3AM as they returned from bars or parties - and kept the party going. Around 4AM, a major ruckus in the parking lot (right outside our sliding glass door) provided excitement but very little in the way of sleep opportunity. Room was OK as far as comfort is concerned - our bed and the TV were fine and that was good, because I wanted to watch a football game.....but I did so sitting and lying on the bed, because the "easy chair" wasn't very comfortable. Also, being on the first floor, you either keep the drapes over the sliding glass door to the parking lot open and get some natural daylight into the room or closed and get some privacy. You can't have both. The bathroom had a leaky faucet and the tub would not drain for quite a while after showering. To their credit, it was fixed shortly after we reported this to the front desk. Breakfast was fair - coffee & juice, English muffins, bad bagels, cereal and the main course, a make your own waffle iron, where you pour the batter onto the griddle, close and wait 2 minutes. Tough to screw this up. For the rate, the room is about what you'd expect......but we'll look elsewhere next time we visit our daughter at UDEL, despite this being a great location for that. Requested non-smoking and got smoking (that was all that was left). Mattress bottom sheet would not stay in place. There was no mattress pad. Smell in the hallways was not fresh nor pleasant.

This hotel was dirty and maid service was less than sub-par. One day I came back to me room and had no pillow cases.

Forty five miles from Dover, this was a very good option to being overcharged for being close to the track. My room showed some past water damage and had a light flickering, but the suite was very large and the beds and bathroom very clean. The internet service was strong and parking very good. This hotel does not have ANY elevators. When they claim that a room is on the 1st floor you STILL have to climb a flight of stairs. Not easily done while carrying a heavy suitcase! The TV didn't work and there was no phone in the room.

The room was absolutely horrible. It stunk an was hidious slept on couch because bed look like sheets never been washed. Do not stay here for your own health.

Pool was green and locked up on 94 degree day. Exercise room (large clsoet) lights were "strobing" and facility unusable. Room was OK and the facility old and worn but clean.
Paid top dollar for this room and found out I could have gotten it for $17.00 per night cheaper. The pool was closed (did not know that at booking time) and the free breakfast was not as advertised. Waffle machine was nowhere to be found but they had the syrup and waffle machine spray out. "You get what you pay for."
The room was small but acceptable. However, I was unable to make an outside call from the room. And while I was only there to meet a ladyfriend for fun and games, I would have difficulty recommending it to others because the clientele I met going back and forth to my car was as low end as the price.

This place is very poorly managed. When we first walked in, we were sent to a unit in a far away building within the hotel. When we complained about the delapitated condition of the unit, we were given another room, which was much better. But even here, the sink tended to clog. The breakfast was lousy.
